Mission X kick-off

European astronaut André Kuipers gave the go-ahead to participants aged 8-12 joining from over 20 countries during a live webcast from ESA's ESTEC space research and technology centre in the Netherlands.

An estimated 15,000 children aged 8 to 12 years old, from 20 countries world wide will begin this 6 week challenge to get fit as an astronaut. André answered dozens of questions coming from students at ESTEC as well as via Twitter. From Colombia to Romania, from Japan to the Netherlands, students asked about space food, the amount of calories astronauts need per day and what is the feeling of weightlessness like.

This challenge features training modules and healthy activities that compare to those used by astronauts during all phases of space flight.
